The First Amendment was approved by Congress during its first session in 1789 in response to concerns by anti‐Federalists that the Constitution did not sufficiently protect individual liberties from federal intrusion. It was made a part of the Constitution in 1791, along with 9 other amendments protecting personal liberties. These liberties were derived to protect the people of the United States. The Freedom of Speech was one of these amendments.
This has been one of the most recognized parts of the Constitution, and is used by many.It is also the most misunderstood and misused.Every time someone wants to push their agenda right or wrong, this is their battle cry.Anytime someone wants to publically attack another person or group, this again is their battle cry.The very amendment derived to protect us, is being used to destroy many.Groups and individuals are using media and television to slander those they do not agree with, and hide behind their “Freedom of Speech”. It is being used as a weapon that was created long ago to protect. It is much like a gun.Was a gun created to protect, or to destroy??It all depends on whom it’s in the hands of.Much like a gun, if used for the wrong purpose, “Freedom of Speech” can be dangerous. its also not safe to be defined by anyone and everyone!!
Freedom of Speech does not give you the right to attack any group or person that you do not agree with.Or does it?Is it fair, or unfair?Does it protect, or destroy?
Is there any real answer to those questions? It all depends on who you ask!!
doubleplusgood post comrade!
Freedom of speech is the right to say whatever you want (and possibly get sued for slander, but I digress) except “Buildings on Fire!” if it isn’t true. Anybody know why?
It is an ammendment that has be prostituted by many. The Constitution itself is constantly under attack in claims of antiquated, and irrelevent statutes. Our values are being torn away piece by piece by the prince of this world and that is all that can be said. You may disagree, however, I can guarantee you that there is at least one thing that you currently think is normal, or tolerable that your parents taught you to be blatant sin. It amazes me how the Christian agenda seems to play step-child to the ability of claiming First Ammendment rights.
Very well said. The manifestation of “leaders” and how they are treated in our country and society should be an embarrassment to all who call themselves American. Rather than point fingers (and laugh along), we each have the opportunity to choose how we will react. It’s in this inidividual reaction that our own character is defined.
I guess the question I ask is “what did the founding fathers intend for this to mean?” I seriously doubt they intended to give individuals to say whatever they want with no consequences.
