The Lesser of the Two Evils???

Is it me, or is the Presidential Election really a matter of voting for the candidate that we can stomach the most?  It is a matter of deciding on who we can tolerate for four years, praying that someone we can really count on comes along in four years?  I see so many flaws in both the current candidates in either the promises that they are making, or the job that they have done, that I almost would rather take a pass, than bet, I mean vote!

Now I know that many people are going to attack me for not doing my part as a Black American and automatically laying down my vote and support for President Obama.  I am obligated to support our Black Brother in his quest for a second term as president.  It’s just what I am supposed to do. Don’t worry about the fact that he has not improved the economy.  Don’t worry that he has cut military spending to weaken our military and its’ ability to effectively protect our freedom.  Don’t worry that when he spoke at Georgetown University he asked them to cover or remove a reference to Jesus in the back drop behind him (review article here).  If you can’t be associated with Jesus because it may offend some of your supports, then that’s a major strike against you right off the bat in my eyes.

Then you have Mitt Romney and his so-called “business experience”.  When he was with Bain and Capital, he was part of a company that bought up struggling companies that send their business to overseas and employ locals at pennies on the dollar so that they could become profitable, only to sell them off. (review article and video here)  To take away jobs from the American people, all in the name of making himself rich.  They bought companies in this country, only to harvest them at a significant profit.  That’s just business many say, but at what expense?  Job’s for the American workers.  The same workers he is now promising to build the economy for.  The same workers he is promising to employ with new jobs.  And as a Mormon, what does he believe about Jesus??

Yeah, I think this election shapes up to, who can we tolerate the most to lead us into the next four years?

Who is “The Lesser of the Two Evils???

News Flash……………………

Just a quick note on something that is really starting to get under my pretty thick skin….. People, every time someone who is White has something negative to say about President Barack Obama, it’s not just because He is Black!!  They may actually be saying it because he is not doing a good job in some areas.  Just like every other person who has been in that position of office. We as Black Americans have got to stop being so sensitive to the point that every time someone says something about the president, it’s just because of his race.  In order to overcome that type of thinking, we have got to get past that!  I am not blind to the fact that there is an issue of racism in our country.  But that is still no excuse to be so thin skinned!!

We gotta get past it and realized, President Obama will be criticized. And sometimes it will be based on what he did or did not do right.

Redeemed!!!

We are at a time in life when the world can be so harsh and judge mental, where accusations run rampant like a common cold, destroying lives and causing damage far beyond repair.   Accusations of wrong doing are at a point where little to no evidence is needed to support them.  They play out boldly in the public’s eye via the news or social media for everyone to weigh in on, and cast their opinions, opening a person up to persecution from those that have little to no true knowledge of the person or the situation.  There are no boundaries to these accusations.  Not race, creed, religious affiliation, or age.  No one is safe.  All it takes is a person or person’s, pointing  a finger and saying “he did it” and the  witch hunt begins.  When these instances are tried out in the media or social networking, the facts become skewed or erased all together.  You tend to only get the side of the accuser/victim and those that have joined in with their one-sided views.  If you are not careful enough to find out all the facts yourself, you may find yourself joining in on the side of the accuser too soon.

Recently we have had many instances that seem to validate my statement above.  Also, as things further unfold, paint a totally different picture to news stories that initially appeared to be slam dunk cases.  Bernie Fine was persecuted and fired from his long standing position of Assistant Coach at a National Power house men’s basketball team.  Now stories are coming out by a couple of his accusers saying that they fabricated the stores for personal gain, saying that Bernie Fine never had inappropriate physical contact with them all.  Bernie Fine appears to be a victim of false allegations and very, very bad timing.  Remember, the allegations came on the heels of the Penn State scandal, when everyone was already on edge and enraged by Jerry Sandusky’s allegations.  Bernie Fine never stood a chance!  He was guilty in the public eye day one.

We are still learning facts in the Trayvon Martin case everyday as things lead up to a trial for George Zimmerman.  When the story first broke, I myself like everyone else felt as if this was such an obvious act of murder and racial injustice that it was a no brainer.  An unarmed black youth killed by a gun welding white male, it just had to be racially motivated.  I found myself jumping on the bandwagon and standing up for justice by persecuting George Zimmerman without knowing all of the facts.  Zimmerman could still be guilty of murdering an unarmed teenager.  But as the facts continue to come out, it may prove that he was in fact fighting for his life, and therefore justified in the shooting Trayvon.  Again we won’t know until all of the facts are presented.

The story of Brian Banks being released from prison has hit the news last week, is the real reason that I wrote this blog.  His story as tragic as it started in 2002, may eventually be an awesome story of redemption.  A story displaying not only how God gives us more than one chance, but how life sometimes does as well.  After being wrongfully accused of rape at 16 years old by a schoolmate, his life is coming full circle to where his dreams can be fulfilled.  A highly recruited football player in California went from standout student athlete to convicted sex offender to having charges that sent him to prison dropped and his criminal record erased.  Robbed of part of his youth and a college experience,  Brian received tryout offers from several NFL teams for a shot to fulfill his dream of playing in the NFL.

Again in Brian’s case, there was no physical evidence or witnesses.  No video to support the claims, just a person pointing a finger and saying “he did it’.   But thankfully, Brian has been redeemed!

Most Hated football player of all time?…..but, Why??

Tim Tebow has been the talk of the NFL since week 5 of this season. First it was the dramatic comebacks he has been able to help lead the Broncos on. Then it was the constant justified comments on how he is not the tradition NFL style quarterback, yet he was still able to help get his team in the endzone when it counted. Now the critics are taking aim at Tim Tebow for his celebrations in which he expresses his love and appreciation of God. Many opposing players, coaches, sportscasters, and even retired players, are calling him out and saying he should keep his expressions of his love for God to himself and not display them publicly. Many players pay homage to God when they score touchdowns, but Tebow is not allowed to I guess. “Tebow, regardless of whether I wish he’d just shut up after a game and go hug his teammates, I think he’s a winner and I respect that about him,” said Plummer. “I think that when he accepts the fact that we know that he loves Jesus Christ, then I think I’ll like him a little better. I don’t hate him because of that, I just would rather not have to hear that every single time he takes a good snap or makes a good handoff” Jake Plummer (former Broncos QB)
Fans and observers of sports, find many favorite athletes to cheer for, for a variety of reasons. Not always just for their performance on the field, but sometimes for the character and charisma they show on and off the field. Many of those same athletes that they are exalting are the very ones that hanging in the night clubs, getting involved in altercation and going to jail, having lots of children by many different women. They are selfish, and self-centered, and have no concept of the word team. But yet these are many times the athletes that we celebrate.
Along comes Tim Tebow, whom I was not a fan of from his college days at Florida, (Mainly because of my loyalty to Mississippi State) who chooses to live a life that celebrates his love for God. Who is humble even when others attempt to exalt him above his teammates, who constantly defers the praise that others try to push on him to God and others around him. Tebow never takes the credit for team wins and success. I disliked him because I thought he was over hyped and made out to be the savior of college football for what he did playing the game. I never thought he was as good a player as what he was heralded to be. But I have come to realize now that it was the doing of the media and not his doing. The media builds people up to eventually tear them down, or allow them to be torn down. Many of the people that dislike Tim Tebow, simply dislike him because the media hypes him. They really know nothing about him. I was one of those people. Do I think he is a below average NFL quarterback? Yes. But I like and respect Tim Tebow for what he stands for and how he wears it. He loves God, is strong about his Christian beliefs (until proven otherwise) and is not afraid to show it! While many Christians have gone into the closet because of the pressures they receive for what they believe, Tim Tebow kicks the closet door wide open! If that is all you can find on the guy to hate him, you need to take a long, long look at yourself and your heart. The tearing down of Tebow because of his beliefs shows what is truly wrong with our country and where our hearts are. Don’t blame Tim Tebow for being who he is. And you certainly shouldn’t hate him for it!

Brainwashed? Ehhh……Mindset? Yes!!!!!

GOP Presidential candidate Herman Cain is catching a lot of flak over comments he recently made on CNN about African-American people “being convinced to vote Democratic no matter what”.  To many African-American (let’s just say “Black” for the sake of keystrokes) people this was an absolute outrage, and turnoff before they even take the time to hear Cain’s reasoning for this statement.  Many Blacks are so taken back at the comments that they have gone completely stone faced to the facts he gives to back them up.  Many have stated that politically it will be a disaster, as they feel he has put down an entire group of people.

So did Cain commit political suicide?  Maybe, but I feel what he said has some validity, and here’s why.

Every election year I speak with most of those in my family and in “My” Black community, and what I find is that it is never a question of who the candidate is or their policy , but if they are a Democrat. The subject of how their plan or agenda is laid out never comes up.  If they are going to raise taxes, or what they are going to do to create jobs for American people never comes up.  If they are for or against Gay marriage never comes up.  If they are pro-life, or pro-choice, never comes up.  It’s always “are they a Democrat”.   That has almost always been the determining factor.  Sad but true.  When President Barack Obama was running for office, there was no question who you were supposed to be voting for if you were a Black person living in this country.  It was not supposed to even be a second thought.  If you even pondered 2 seconds when asked you received a look of utter amazement and risked losing your “Black card”.  Punishable by being locked in a room for 48 hours listening to Earth, Wind, and Fire, Stevie Wonder, Maze, and Lil Wayne just to earn part of it back!  This is the mindset that people had when President Obama was running.  Right or wrong, good policy  or not, he was absolutely the only choice .  If you read one of my previous blog post,  I detailed how difficult of a decision that election was for me because of my conservative beliefs and feelings.  I felt that I owed the people that died for me to have the right to vote, more than just a hap-hazard decision just because the candidate was Black and Democratic.  As bad as I wanted to see history made, with the first Black president for this country, I still had a duty to those who never even got the opportunity to vote just because they were Black.  I forced myself to truly look at the candidates and their policies (not party) before making a decision. I eventually did vote for our president, (cause I know I had many of the Black readers hanging! ) but it was not without prayer and really viewing the agenda of those running.

My feeling is this, we as Black people have to really analyze why we do many of the things that we do.  Why do we cut the ham in half when we cook it in the roasting pan?  Is it because it makes it taste better, or is it because our great, great, Grandmother did it that way?  Maybe she did it because that was the only way it would actually fit in the pan, and never told us. Why are you and your family Baptist? Because that is what your great, great, great, Grandfather woke up one morning and decided you all looked Baptist that day?  Or was it because the slave owner of the plantation that those before you worked on was a Baptist that took them to church with him to sit in the balcony!  So they considered themselves Baptist from then on.  I know that sounds harsh, but many of the things we do, we do just because those before us did them, “so it must be the right thing to do”.

Lose the mind-set people!!  Or at least stop condemning those that have……

Come On People……..

I have read more than a few headlines over the last couple of days
stating how George Bush has snubbed Obama by choosing not to attend the
ceremony in New York and I just don’t see what the big deal is. I think if
anyone is being snubbed, its the people that are attending the ceremony that
lost loved ones, not the President. George Bush stated that he did not want to
attend as he would like to continue to stay out of the spot light. I have no
problem with this at all, seeing how he made the same statement on Oprah months
ago. In fact he stated it in a way that made me truly respect his stand on it. His
point was that the position of the President has enough responsibilities
already without having some former President sticking his nose in every time he
turned around. He also said that he respected President Obama too much to
always be in the way or trying stay in the spotlight sharing the stage every
chance he got. I respected that a lot.

I have heard people trying to make Bush not showing up in New York
a racial issue. Oh here we go again!! Every time something is done that many
don’t agree with that happens to involve people of different races, you have
your group that makes it a racial issue or injustice. The spirit of Kanye West
rides again!! I’m sorry, but everything is not a racial issue. Every time
someone says something negative to say about President Obama, its not always because
of race. Many people had negative things to say about President Bush, not once
did I hear anyone say it was because of race, so stop flipping the script and
being hypocritical! We are really going to have to get past these things
people.

Now I’m no fool. I do know that race does play a factor in many
things in this country, and it happens at all levels. I am a Black male living
in the south, so I think I am pretty qualified to speak on that. But again,
everything is not driven by race, so we gotta stop using that as an excuse
every time something is done we may not like. If the President had that
mentality, he would not have reached the level of President.

How Should We React???

In the wake of the news of the death of Osama Bin-Laden, I myself , like many others  i’m sure, am torn as to how I should react.  I like many wanted  justice (or possibly revenge) for the acts of those responsible for the attacks of 9-1-1.  I was angered at the way we were attacked, and wanted those responsible to pay for what they did.  I was pumped when President Bush declared that he would hunt down those responsible and bring them to justice even if it meant their death.   I think almost all Americans felt the same way.

Now as that day seems to have come, I find myself caught somewhat in a state of confusion.  Should I be celebrating the killing of Osama Bin-Laden?  Should I simply feel relieved and satisfied that his personal reign of terror is over, am I risking not be patriotic by not rejoicing outwardly in his death?  Should I have joy knowing that those who lost loved ones in attacks under Bin-Laden’s leadership, finally get some closer in their loss.  Or finally should I feel saddened by death of another person without them understanding and accepting Acts 2:21.  There is no guarantee and it is highly unlikely that Bin-Laden would have ever accepted Acts 2:21 before his death, as his life seemed to be dedicated to bringing terror to anyone of this country because of what is was based and founded upon.

I again am happy to those who have received closer on this day.  I thank the many members of the Armed Forces that have fought and died in this pursuit of Justice.  It is a great victory for this country and the world over.  But please understand as I ponder how I should react to it.

Enough is enough!!

I just listened to a comment online by Tucker Carlson filling in for Sean Hannity  on Hannity Tonight , and I have to say that it may have been the dumbest statement I have heard when it comes to Michael Vick yet. (See comment here: http://content.usatoday.com/communities/gameon/post/2010/12/michael-vick-tucker-carlson-executed/1?csp=hf)  To say on national television that Vick should have been executed for what he did is about at hateful a statement as anyone has made.  So now Vick belongs along the same category as Ted Bundy, Charles Manson, and executed DC sniper John Mohammed?

I myself am a huge dog and animal lover, and feel that the crimes that Michael Vick committed are almost unimaginable.  To torture and killed dogs in the way he and his group did is something I could not even visualize let alone justify in anyway.  But is the life of a dog or animal on the same rank or level as a human being?  Trust me, I am not marginalizing the horrific acts that he committed against those dogs, but are their lives equivalent to the lives of the victims of John Mohammed?

All over this world animals are hunted for sport without people like Tucker Carlson saying as much as a whisper about it.  I would even be willing to bet that Mr. Carlson is a meat eater himself.  Before making a comment like he did, he should monitor the process in which cows, chicken and that turkey he ate for Thanksgiving are slaughtered.  I would like to see how judge mental he would be then.

The thing that stuck out with me the most about his comment is how he prefaced it by saying that he was a Christian.  So he says he is a follower of the “Forgiving God of a second chance” (Eph. 4:32), but yet he can’t find it in his heart to forgive Michael Vick.  Instead he wants to see him executed.  Does Tucker feel the same way about the thousands of doctors that kill unborn babies everyday around this country?  Does he feel they should be executed also?  Or does he feel that is different, like the supporters of abortion he feels that they are not yet a life!!

Bottom line, if Michael Vick were a bus driver that committed these acts, people would not care as much about how sternly he was punished as long as he was punished.  The fact that Michael Vick is a high profile athlete who’s comes into our homes every week making millions of dollars, which somehow gives us the right to judge him.  And he was in fact punished strongly for his actions.  But what about Bernie Madoff who single handily wiped out the futures of thousands with his money making scheme, is he forgotten?  Kenneth Lay who headed the Enron scandal that bankrupt an entire company, wiping out the retirement of dedicated workers of the company that made him a multi-millionaire.

Tell me, does Michael Vick really deserve to be listed among this group of people?

5 Reason’s Mullen to the U Makes Sense

Now this is very hard being the Miss. State fan that I am, for me to put this down in writing, but it really only makes sense.  I am a huge fan of Dan Mullen, and know what it would do to State if he were offered the University of  Miami Head Coaching position and left.  But it is also because I am such a supporter of Dan Mullen that I can set aside my selfish feelings and support him in what I think would be an awesome next step in his promising future as one of the next great coaches in college football.  Given the talent, recruiting budget, University support (not that he does not have that now at Miss. State, just being on a higher economic level) and location, he will be right up there with Nick Saban as a college football coach.  And he is as likable a person as it gets!

The bottom line reasons in detail it all makes sense:

  1. National Recognition – Even given the more recent struggles of the Hurricanes football teams, they have remained one of the most talent laden teams in the country year in and year out.  They have not always show It on the field, but they still get some of the best players in the country.  Is it location? Is it the legend of the U?   Who knows, but the players will still line up in hopes of getting a shot at playing there. Dan Mullen took a team of Bulldogs that may not have been as talented as their 8 win record suggest, and got more out of them than could have been imagined.  Think what he could do with a recruiting class that could be in the top 10 every year!

2Recruiting Hotbed – Year in and year out, the state of Florida produces some of               the best athletes in the country.  You can find 4 and 5 star recruits on teams around             the country, all hailing from the Sunshine state. Dan Mullen has deep ties in the                     state from time spent recruiting for the University of Florida and has the                                 personality and drive to sway them to South Florida all day.   If you have ever                      talked with him, you walk away in amazement at how down to earth and personal he            is.  Take note Urban Myer and Nick Saban!

3Economic Support – The University of Miami has always been supported well                 financially by the alum and community.  It started in the championship winning                     days of Schnellenberger and Johnson, until even now when they struggle. And                       remember, they had a 7 win season this year.  At many schools that’s reason to                     stand up and cheer.  So he would not be walking into a situation in dire straits.                       When the Canes are winning, which I don’t doubt Mullen would do there, they are                 the toast of Florida not just Miami.  And the entire nation notices

4Chance to rule the ACC – In a conference that is not as competitive from top                    to bottom as the SEC, Miami with Dan Mullen and the talent he could recruit                          would rule the ACC for many years.  With the main competition coming from the                  north in Tallahassee and Blacksburg, VA  Miami is once again “cream of the crop”                  in an unbalanced ACC.

5Location, Location, Location – Why not live in Miami, Florida??  Nothing                      else left to be said.

Again, as a State fan I would hate to see Dan Mullen leave our school.  But as a fan of Dan Mullen, I would love to see him get the opportunity to be recognized as the great coach and person that he is.  We all knew after the success of this season he would be a hot topic of discussion around the nation.  Now we may have to deal with the results of that success.
