Aren’t we past these types of things………….

It was recently announced that an Orlando promoter named Don “Moose” Lewis was starting an “all white” basketball league with about 12 teams called the All American Basketball League.  The league would comprise of only White basketball players with two White parents both born in the United States.  The league would accept no variations of the before mentioned rules.  Lewis states that the league would allow White players to play “fundamental” basketball rather than the “street” basketball that is played by people of color. Lewis quoted in the Florida Today publication, that he is not racist and that he does not hate people of color.  Lewis claims recent scandals in professional basketball, such as the gun charges against the Washington Wizards Gilbert Arenas have made the creation of all-white teams a necessity.
Lewis plans to base the league out of Atlanta, which ironically is one of the most populated cities for Blacks in the country.  The teams will exist in mostly small cities in the southeast.

The desire to form this league can be spun any way that a person chooses to spin it.  The bottom line is that it goes against the spirit of inclusiveness that this country is suppose to be all about. Do we achieve that 100% in every city in America….I doubt it.  But when you look on 1600 Pennsylvania Ave, I think it shows that we are moving in the right direction in a lot of ways.  Does everyone agree with that, probably not.  But the fact still remains that we are a country that consist of people with different opinions, ideas and beliefs, which is what makes this a great nation.  There are some that will think Don Lewis in really on to something with the All American Basketball League, and that is their opinion and therefore their right.  But again if the spirit of this country is going to be inclusiveness, then there can never be a league of any kind that promotes separation by race, color or culture……….

Are they going to play on 8 1/2 ft goals or is there no dunking allowed?

Yeah–pretty stupid idea. Probably won’t go very far.

How about this…there are currently 32 NFL teams. 6 of those teams have a black head coach (that’s more than 18%).
Why is there a rule in the NFL that a team HAS to interview a black coach before making a hiring decision when the percentage of black head coaches is greater than the percentage of black people in America by nearly 6%? Why can’t a team be allowed to just hire the best talent rather than be forced to interview people because of a policy?

Jason, I will tell you that I was never a big fan of the whole “Affirmative Action” push that was implemented by the government. I think it forces companies to consider hiring a person because they were black just to make the numbers, even if they may not have been the most qualified for the position. I don’t feel that is fair to others that are not black and may be better qualified. But…I do understand the thinking in the rules such as the “Rooney” rule the NFL has. Simply because for a long long time black candidates were never even considered by many teams simply because they were black. They never got the opportunity to even be interviewed. So I think some of the rules are needed, but there has to be a balance to it. I am not a fan of the whole forced hand thing. But the NFL of the past proved the need for the rule, so that is why it was put into place. It was really dictated by history.
Just for the record, there are only 5 black head coaches in the NFL: Raheem Brock, Lovie Smith, Marvin Lewis, Mike Singletary, and Mike Tomlin. 🙂

This is my opinion. I think this dude is crazy, and he also makes me feel like the word (segregation) is coming back. He must realize that just like people, the game of basketball has different styles of play, and if you really pay attention to the sport, the most fundamentally sound players are from other countries. Not whites, black, or should I say american. We as american’s have gotten away from fundamental basketball and creating an all white league will not accomplish anything, but will bring question to whether he really is a racist or not. I just don’t know whats up with this dude. I guess he thinks a white man is safe from crime in a all white league do to other player mistakes they made while being a NBA player. All I can say is GOD BLESS YOU BROTHER. Hope you see the light at the end of the tunnel. ( NOTHING LEFT TO SAY )

Carrol, most people are past these things. Some, black and white will never get past this issue, mostly out of self interest (i.e. this guy, Rev AL, Jesse, etc.) This guy has the “right” to do it, but he is out for himself, and it will fail. Eric, you are correct about fundamental basketball although you can still find it in some High Schools and a few colleges. Again when its all about self, the fundamentals of basketball and life fade.
